How to Vote Biblically

Four Biblical Foundation Truths in a Politically Charged World

As Pastors we are called to lead people, to shepherd them, and to equip them with a biblical worldview.

I.   Rest in God's Sovereignty

A.   God operates in sovereignty

21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. Daniel 2:21 ESV

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13-1 ESV

B.    Surrender to God’s sovereignty

Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, Romans 13:2- -3 ESV

C.    We have a blessed Hope, the King sits on the throne.

16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. I Thessalonians 4: 16-17 ESV

We act surprised when a fallen world does and acts in sinful ways

II.                  Pray for your Enemies

A.     Don’t let politics divide the church Galatians 5:15 NIV

15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

B.     Pray for those who are against you  Luke 6: 27-33 NIV

27 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[b] either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

C.    Pursue Unity

 Ephesians 4:1-6 ESV

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all

III.            Defend Kingdom Policy

A.     Obey God and His authors more than anything else

We must obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29 ESV)

B.     Speak and Stand for truth in Love

Mark 6:18 NIV 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

C.    The Bible speaks to that

He has told you, O man, what is good;    and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness,[a]    and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 8:6 ESV

1.    Biblical Justice.

Christians and churches should advocate for justice in the sense that every sinful society needs constant moral reform.

2.    Sanctity of Life.

All life is sacred and a gift from God. From conception through death, all life is to be valued, nurtured, and protected.

3.    Marriage and Family.

“The family is God’s original building block of society, it’s the foundation for every dimension of human life.” To destroy and redo fine the definition of marriage is not good for society.

4.    Stand with Israel

5.    Religious freedom

6.    Court appointments

7.    Compassion

IV.          Operate in prophetic relevance

A.    Pray

Nehemiah 1:4-5 ESV

As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments,

B.    Disciple

Psalm 119:105 NIV Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

C.    Evangelism

Luke 19:10 NIV For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

D.   Spirit Empowered

E.    Participate
