House of Prayer: Adoration

Prayer begins with knowing who you are speaking to. Jesus taught us to begin with both confidence and reverence: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.” Adoration turns our attention away from ourselves and toward the character, holiness, and faithfulness of God.

“Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may Your name be kept holy.” — Matthew 6:9

Know Who You Are Talking To

God invites us to approach Him as Father. This is not a distant or impersonal relationship. Through Jesus, we have access to God, and through the Spirit we have been adopted as His children.

• Isaiah 64:8 — The Lord is our Father; we are the clay, and He is the potter.

• Psalm 103:13 — The Lord is tender and compassionate toward His children.

• 2 Corinthians 6:18 — God calls us His sons and daughters.

• Psalm 68:5 — He is a Father to the fatherless and a defender of widows.

• 1 John 3:1 — The Father’s love is so great that He calls us His children.

You Have Access

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus … let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.” — Hebrews 10:19–22

Romans 8:15 reminds us that the Spirit does not return us to fear. He brings us into adoption, and by Him we cry, “Abba, Father.” Hebrews 4:16 then invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace, where we receive mercy and find grace when we need it most.

Boldness and Reverence Belong Together

Our access is real, but it is never careless. We come boldly because of Jesus, and we come reverently because the One we approach is holy.

“Familiarity there may be, but let it not be unhallowed. Boldness there should be, but let it not be impertinent.” — Charles Spurgeon

“This holy boldness is not in the least opposite to reverence.” — Jonathan Edwards

God is our Father, and He is also holy. Scripture repeatedly calls us to recognize the weight of His presence:

• Exodus 3:5 — “Put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground.”

• Psalm 96:9 — “Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth!”

• Habakkuk 2:20 — “The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.”

• Ecclesiastes 5:2 — God is in heaven and we are on earth, so we should not be hasty with our words.

• Hebrews 12:28–29 — We offer acceptable worship with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

God’s holiness does more than inspire awe; it also calls us upward. First Peter 1:14–16 says that, as obedient children, we are to be holy in our conduct because He is holy. Isaiah 57:15 shows the wonder of His character: the high and holy One also dwells with the contrite and lowly, reviving their hearts.

Isaiah 6 gives us a vivid picture. The seraphim cry, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” Isaiah’s response is humility: “Woe is me!” Recognition of God’s holiness leaves no room for pride, but James 4:6 assures us that God gives grace to the humble.

“Hallowed Be Your Name”

The opening of the Lord’s Prayer contains both recognition and honor:

• Recognition: “Our Father who is in heaven.”

• Honor: “Hallowed be Your name.”

Hallowed comes from the idea of acknowledging and regarding something with deep reverence and profound respect—to recognize it as holy and set apart from what is ordinary.

Enter with Thanksgiving and Praise

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.” — Psalm 100:4

Praise is the proper way to begin because it helps us see God clearly. It focuses us on who He is, how He has been faithful, and how He will continue to be faithful.

What Is Praise?

1. We Praise God for Who He Is

The names of God reveal His character. Let them shape the way you address Him:

• Elohim — Mighty God and Creator (Genesis 1:1)

• El Roi — The God Who Sees Me (Genesis 16:13–14)

• El Shaddai — God Almighty (Genesis 17:1–2)

• Jehovah Jireh — The Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:13–14)

• Jehovah Rophe — The Lord Who Heals (Exodus 15:26)

• Jehovah Shalom — The Lord Is Peace (Judges 6:24)

• Jehovah Tsebaoth — The Lord of Hosts (Psalm 24:10)

• Jehovah Tsuri — The Lord My Rock (Psalm 144:1)

• Jehovah Roi — The Lord My Shepherd (Psalm 23:1)

2. We Praise God for What He Has Done

Bring your praise reports to mind. Remind yourself of His faithfulness by telling the story again. Name the prayers He has answered, the doors He has opened, the protection He has provided, and the grace that has carried you.

3. We Praise God for What He Will Do

Praise also looks forward in faith, lining up our words with God’s promises. In 2 Chronicles 20:18–24, Jehoshaphat and Judah worshiped before the battle was won. The singers went ahead of the army declaring, “Give thanks to the Lord, for His steadfast love endures forever.” When they began to sing and praise, the Lord moved on their behalf.

Praise focuses us on who our God is, how He has been faithful, and how He will be faithful. Starting prayer with praise prepares our hearts for a fruitful time with God.

How You Start Matters

“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” — James 5:16

Praise gives us heaven’s perspective on our situation. Thanksgiving and praise are like the proper password for entering in: they move our attention from the size of the problem to the greatness of God.

A Six-Minute Adoration Practice

Use this simple practice to begin your prayer time. Set aside two minutes for each movement.

Minutes 1–2: Declare Scripture

• Psalm 9:1 — “I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds.”

• 1 Chronicles 29:13 — “Now therefore, our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name.”

• Isaiah 25:1 — “Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You and praise Your name, for in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things.”

• Psalm 103:1–4 — Praise the Lord and remember His benefits: He forgives, heals, redeems, and crowns us with love and compassion.

• Psalm 136:1–3 — Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good and His love endures forever.

• Psalm 30:11–12 — He turns mourning into dancing so our hearts may sing His praise.

• Psalm 145:3 — Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness is beyond measure.

• Revelation 4:11 — Our Lord and God is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power because He created all things.

• Psalm 34:1–4 — Praise Him at all times; magnify the Lord together and remember how He delivers from fear.

• Exodus 15:2 and Psalm 28:7 — The Lord is our strength, defense, shield, help, and salvation.

Minutes 3–4: Thank God for Personal Blessings

Be specific. Slow down long enough to notice the gifts that can easily become ordinary.

• Daily provision and physical life: breath, health, food, clean water, shelter, safety, rest, and sleep.

• Relationships and community: family, friends, pastors, mentors, teachers, and even the companionship of a pet.

• Spiritual and emotional blessings: God’s unconditional love, peace in storms, forgiveness, and answered prayer.

• Growth and experience: lessons learned through trials, talents and skills, the beauty of creation, time, and new opportunities to pursue God and make a difference.

Minutes 5–6: Thank God for His Attributes

Use these short prayers as prompts. Do not rush through them; choose the ones that most help you see and honor God today.

• I AM — You are the Great I AM, perfectly self-sufficient. Thank You that I can find all I need in You.

• Infinite — Lord, I am in awe of Your infinite nature. Thank You for Your measureless wisdom, grace, and love.

• Omnipotent — You are the all-powerful God. Thank You that I can trust Your limitless strength; nothing is impossible with You.

• Immutable — You are the unchanging One. Thank You for being steadfast and faithful—my solid rock in a constantly changing world.

• Holy — Your holiness is beyond my comprehension, yet I marvel at Your perfection and purity. Thank You for transforming me to be holy as You are holy.

• Omniscient — You are the all-knowing God, and nothing takes You by surprise. Thank You for knowing the best way for my life.

• Omnipresent — You are everywhere. Even when my way seems dark, Your presence is with me. Thank You for promising never to leave me.

• Mighty Creator — You created the sun, moon, and stars, yet You desire a relationship with me. Help me notice Your beauty all around me.

• Love — Your love is limitless and sacrificial. Thank You that Your love never fails.

• The Lord Who Provides — Thank You for providing for me and my family. I praise You for past provision and thank You in faith for how You will provide again.

• Good — God, thank You for being so good. Help me notice Your goodness in my life and praise You more and more.

• God Almighty — You are all-sufficient and the source of every blessing. When things seem impossible to me, You remain the God of endless possibilities.

• Light of the World — There is no darkness in You. Help me walk in Your light—in honesty with You, with others, and with myself.

• The First and the Last — Jesus, thank You for having the first and final word in this world and in my life. Complete the good work You began in me.

• The Lord My Banner and Victory — You see every enemy before me and know how to guide me through the battle. Thank You for ultimate victory through Jesus Christ.

• The Lord Is Just — You see the need for justice in our world. Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank You for being both just and merciful through Jesus.

• God Who Sanctifies — You are the One who cleanses, purifies, and transforms my heart. Thank You for sanctifying me through Jesus.

• Merciful — Your mercy does not change with my performance; mercy is who You are. Thank You for taking the weight of sin from my shoulders.

• God Who Is Peace — Thank You for giving me Your presence in stress and anxiety. Hold me in Your peace even when I am surrounded by chaos.

• Gracious — Thank You for Your abundant grace, which frees me from the payment for sin and welcomes me into an intimate relationship with You.

• Intercessor — Jesus, thank You for bridging the gap so I can come boldly to the Father. Thank You for praying for me and knowing what I need.

• Father God — Thank You for calling me Your child, loving me, and caring for me. Help me recognize the ways You care for me as a good Father.

• Teacher — Holy Spirit, thank You for opening my heart and illuminating Your Word so I can learn Your life-giving ways and walk in truth.

• Wise — Lord of wisdom, every move You make flows from perfect wisdom. Thank You for sharing Your wisdom with me; no wisdom of this world compares with You.

• Lord and Master — Thank You for showing us gentle, humble leadership through Jesus, who washed His disciples’ feet.

• Spirit of the Lord — Thank You for living in me. Counsel me as I walk through this day and help me make choices that bring glory to Your name.

• Faithful — Thank You for being faithful even when I am not. You keep Your promises, and no one is like You.

• The Lord Who Heals — As Creator of the human body, You know exactly what it needs. Thank You that You can use any avenue You choose to bring healing.

• Spirit of Truth — Thank You for being the source of all truth. Speak to my heart and counsel me when I need clarity.

Before bringing requests, needs, and burdens, pause to recognize the One who hears you. He is your Father. You have access through Jesus. He is holy, worthy, faithful, and near.
