House of Prayer Series

House of Prayer Series

Week 1- Introduction

Matthew 6:9-12 “ Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.  Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread,  and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [ For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen ]”

1- Why do we pray?

A- Jesus prayed.

Matthew 14:23-  And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

Mark 1:35- And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.

Luke 6:12 -  In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God

John 17:1-26 - …9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world   but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours…

Jesus had a consistent practice of spending time in prayer.

We are to be imitators of Christ.

B- Jesus instructs us to pray.

Matthew 6:5 - “And WHEN you pray…

Jesus instructs us to pray throughout His time on earth:

Matthew -  5:44; 6:5-12; 7:7-12; 9:38;. 21:22; 24:20; 26:41;

Mark - 11:24-25; 13:18, 14:38

Luke - 6:28; 10:2, 11:2; 18:1; 21:36; 22:30

John - 14:13-14; 15:7; 15:17

C- For our relationship with God.

Prayer is at its most basic form a conversation

Without communication- there can be no relationship.

2- What happens when we pray?

a- Prayer aligns us with God’s Spirit, with His Will and with His Power.

      (Romans 8:26-28; Psalm 19:14;)

b- Prayer changes our focus from the issues around us to the God Who is far

greater than those issues- and it invites Him onto the battlefield on our behalf.

     (Psalm 103; Romans 8:31-39; Matthew 6:25-33)

c- Prayer opens direct access into the Throneroom of Heaven and to

    God the Father.

     (John 16:26-27; Hebrews 4:16)

e- Prayer affects the supernatural battle happening in the spiritual realm.

     (Ephesians 6:10-18a; 2 Chronicles 20:1-30; Daniel 10)

f- Prayer changes our circumstances .

(James 5:13-18; Matthew 21:18-22)

Bottom Line:

1- It changes us.

2- It changes the balance of power in the spiritual realm.

3- It changes our circumstances

3- How NOT to pray.

Matthew 6:5-8 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Don’t:

  • Use fancy language

  • Repeat meaningless words

  • Parrot other people’s prayers

God doesn’t need educated, flowery words from you. He wants your attention and attempt to communicate

4- How to pray

Matthew 6:9 “ Pray then like this: …”

Mathew 6 Prayer Pattern-

Step 1- Adoration - Our Father- Hallowed Be Your Name

We start by recognizing WHO we are praying to and giving Him the Praise and

adoration He deserves.

Step 2- Purpose - Your Kingdom Come- Your will be done

We recognize that we are here to serve the King and prioritize His Kingdom over our comfort and desires.

Step 3- Petition - Give us this day…

We position ourselves in reliance on Him- the petition gives legal

access/authority to Him over our circumstances and situations.

Step 4- Forgiveness - Forgive us our sins, as we forgive

We ask God to search us and show us areas we need to repent.

We forgive others and don’t allow bitterness to block our prayers.

Step 5- Protection - Let us not succumb to temptation, deliver us from evil

We pray from a place of His victory- not just for victory. We pray the Word of God.

Step 6- Listen & Respond - For Yours is the Kingdom & power & Glory forever- Amen

We give Him time and attention to speak back to us. Then respond.

Homework: Choose your level- Challenge yourself:

Level 1 – 1 minute in each step each day.

Level 2 – 3 minutes in each step each day.

Level 3 – 5 minutes in each step each day.
