Where Do I Go From Here?
Luke 14:25-33 25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Where Do I Go from Here? Discipleship matters
I. It Costs to Follow Christ
A. Jesus must have your highest allegiance (Verse 26)
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”
B. Bear your own cross and come after Him (Verse 27)
27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
C. Count the Cost before you commit (Verses 28-32)
28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
D. Surrender Everything to Christ (Verse 33)
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
II. Discipleship Requires Us to Grow in Christ
A. You have to Grow Up in your walk with Christ
1 Peter 2:2-3 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
1. Practical ways we grow
● Have a hunger to grow.
● Establish humility in your life.
● Read your Bible, pray every day.
● Take notes in church and meditate and study what was shared.
● Put into practice what you are learning.
● Get involved in a growth avenue in the church.
2. Avenues of Growth in this family
● Wednesday nights, Serve Team, Small Groups, Project 13, Men’s Ministry, True North,
Women’s Ministry, Marriage Class, Financial Peace, GriefShare, Monday night prayer, Thursday prayer 11-1 .
3. We Never Stop Growing
The goal is spiritual maturation; we want to develop spiritual parents.
*Are you a fan of Jesus or are you a disciple?
*If you were not coming to a Sunday service for a month, would your spiritual life collapse?
Three stages of Spiritual Maturity
1. Immature – Who is looking after me?
2. Intermediate – How can I contribute?
3. Mature – Who am I helping?
*At every stage, you are still growing, even when you are mature.”
Hebrews 5:12-13 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
B. You must be rooted and grounded
Colossians 2:6-7 6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
*Rooted is a horticultural term dealing with plants: The roots hold a plant in place and provide nutrients.
*grounded is an architectural term dealing with buildings and structures. A building needs a firm foundation to support the structure.
III. Discipleship Reproduces and Multiplies for the Sake of Christ
A. God designed things to multiply and reproduce
Genesis 1:11-12
11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
B. We are to reproduce our faith
2 Timothy 1:5 5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
2 Timothy 2:2 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
C. We are to be spiritual mothers and fathers to other people
1 Corinthians 4
14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me. 17 That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.
