America and the Plumb Line of God
Text: Amos 7:7–8
7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,
“Behold, I am setting a plumb line
in the midst of my people Israel;
I will never again pass by them”
2 Corinthians 6:16b -18
“I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
17 Therefore go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
then I will welcome you,
18 and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”
A wall may appear straight to the human eye, but the plumb line exposes the truth.
In Amos' vision, God is holding a plumb line, not against a building, but against His people. God was measuring the spiritual condition of Israel.
Historical Background of Amos
Who Was Amos?
The Current Situation of Israel at the moment Amos preached:
Politically
The nation was strong.
Economically
The nation was wealthy.
Militarily
The nation was secure.
Spiritually
The nation was collapsing.
People assumed prosperity meant God's approval.
God said prosperity had hidden their corruption.
Israel’s Moral Compromise
Israel had adopted pagan influences from surrounding nations.
They mixed true worship with idolatry.
They tried to worship God while living according to worldly values.
This spiritual compromise deeply grieved God.
Israel was out of alignment.
7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line”
The Plumb Line Reveals Reality
“Amos, what do you see?”
The purpose of a plumb line is not condemnation but revelation.
God wanted Amos to see what God saw.
Often we see ourselves differently than God sees us:
We excuse what God calls sin.
We tolerate what God condemns.
We celebrate what God grieves over.
The plumb line exposes hidden crookedness.
‘God's people can look successful, religious, and prosperous on the outside while becoming dangerously misaligned on the inside. God's plumb line exposes what human eyes often miss.’
Ask God, “Show me what You see in my heart.”
As David prayed:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23).
II. The Plumb Line Calls for Repentance
“I am setting a plumb line among My people Israel.”
‘When society moves the boundaries, God still holds the plumb line.’
Drift in Priorities: From God-Centered to Self-Centered
Drift in Marriage and Family
"When covenant is replaced by convenience, marriages become fragile."
Drift in Integrity and Truthfulness
Drift in Relationship with God
"The greatest tragedy is not when people stop believing in God, but when they believe in Him without surrendering to Him."
Drift in the Value of Human Life
Before we point to society's failures, we must examine ourselves.
Before asking God to change the nation, we must ask Him to change us.
III. Jesus Christ, Our Perfect Plumb Line
Ultimately, the plumb line is not merely a principle; it is a Person.
"Before God changes a nation, He calls His people to change."
God's plumb line is first placed in the sanctuary before it is placed in the nation.
At the cross:
God's justice was satisfied.
God's mercy was demonstrated.
God's grace was extended.
When we surrender to Christ, He not only forgives our crookedness but begins straightening our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The question for America today is:
"What does God see when He holds His plumb line against our nation?"
Plumb line is the blueprint of how our lives are supposed to be.
America
We remain one of the most blessed nations in history.
Yet material prosperity can create spiritual complacency.
Many people have:
More possessions than ever
Less prayer than ever
More entertainment than ever
Less devotion than ever
"A nation can be financially rich and spiritually bankrupt at the same time."
"I hate, I despise your feast days..." (Amos 5:21)
‘Because worship had become ritual without repentance.’
Churches exist on nearly every corner.
Christian resources are everywhere.
Yet many profess faith while rejecting biblical authority in daily life.
What makes America Great again, not merely political change.
‘It is spiritual awakening in the church.’
Judgment begins in the house of God.
Revival begins in the house of God.
Conclusion
The most important question is not ” what is wrong with America, but what is out of alignment in me."
Can we allow God to hold His plumb line in us?
What area of my life is God measuring today?
Where have I drifted from His standard?
What step of repentance and obedience is He calling me to take?
Is my prayer life aligned?
Is my marriage aligned?
Is my integrity aligned?
